Every stick of wood on this building was taken from reclaimed wood. The owner is an arborist who also happens to own a mill. He cut pine, redwood and fir trees that needed to be removed from the "urban forest" and milled them into beams, studs and joists that were kiln dried and then used them all in the framing, siding, stairs, outrigging and planters. He was also able to mill and surface pine for all his flooring, incense cedar for the screen at the front and black acacia for his cabinetry. The 100 year metal roof means that over time this building will have an incredibly small carbon footprint.
The 5000 s.f. office building was built on a 25' wide ell shaped lot. The second level was stepped back from the first in order to get windows in on the south side. A courtyard separates the front half of the offices from the back half giving the interior offices both windows and light on two sides. When walking through the building all the wood and the design's attention to providing light give me a feeling of warmth and happiness. You can tell the owner is proud of his offices and that his employees are glad to be given such a pleasant place to work.
